Leadership Development Programme (Residency)

The Leadership Development Programme is a core part of our alliance approach to talent identification and succession planning. The programme has 3 core strands

Strand 1: Characteristics and qualities of a high performing leader (one day training session)

Strand 2: Residency at another school to experience a different leadership context

Strand 3: Leadership coaching - optional choice of additional one-to-one coaching

Participants are nominated by their Headteacher and need to complete an application form by October half term for January cohort and February half term for June cohort

The Leadership Residency is very much at the heart of the programme. Individual partner schools will provide a different experience in response to the needs of the participant.  However, to provide consistency and quality assurance, all participants should have the following common experience at the host school of a minimum of 2 day residency to include:

• Meeting with Head/senior member of SLT on first morning to provide background to the school’s context and approach to developing leadership

• Discussion of participant’s focus and agreement on how the participant will collect evidence and report back on their focus area(s)

• Classroom observation/tracking a class

• Interviewing a sample of students in connection with their focus

• Meeting with an appropriate range of staff with leadership responsibilities, including support staff

• If practical, attendance at one SLT meeting or appropriate team or staff meeting

• Collation or fact-finding to support  focused area(s) of interest

• Completion by participants of a 15 minute presentation/feedback at the end of the two days residency based on their areas of interest/agreed focus  to Head/Senior SLT contact at host school

• Presentation must include a slide/ statement reflecting their learning about leadership. Suggested title of slide: What I have learnt about school leadership during my residency.

Two days will be the expected norm but schools may of course request/offer a longer residency period of 3 to 5 days

 The basics/practicalities

• All partners who are taking part  to have a designated SLT contact person to facilitate the hosting of residencies between schools

• Each participating partner school decides the number of  overall residencies per year, with a commitment to hosting at least one residency per term

• *Residencies will be a minimum of two consecutive days, with five days the maximum – depending on the leadership needs of the resident and capacity of the host school

• Residencies across the partnership will take place within the first two weeks of the  2015 Spring and first two weeks of the 2015 Summer terms

• Participants complete an “application” form following nomination by the Head and agreement around areas of leadership development to focus on during residency

• The application is sent off to Emma Hazlegreaves at The Compton to coordinate the distribution of  residencies and match needs and capacity across the partnership

• Emma will facilitates the focus of residency/ agree dates etc. between SLT contact  and the leader resident

• SLT contacts leader resident  at least five working days prior to residency to confirm details of programme

• Residencies can be cross phase/ in a different educational context (e.g. Special school/ 6th Form College) if appropriate for leadership development

• All residencies  will follow protocols of confidentiality  and any sharing of information will be agreed by the SLT contact and leader resident

•  Completion by participants of a 15 minute presentation/feedback at the end of the two days residency based on their areas of interest/agreed focus  to Head/Senior SLT contact at host school

• Presentation must include a slide/ statement reflecting their learning about leadership. Suggested title of slide: What I have learnt about school leadership during my residency

• Following completion of the residency, participants are required to feedback their learning to a member of their own Senior Team and to forward an electronic copy of their presentation to Emma Hazlegreaves (Assistant Head) at The Compton.

Two days will be the expected norm but schools may of course request/offer a longer residency period of 3 to 5 days
