As a Fresh Start school in 1992, the continuing professional development of staff has been at the heart of our sustained success as an Ofsted graded outstanding school. We have an excellent track record in training, retaining and developing staff as outstanding classroom practitioners, middle and senior leaders
Our capacity and readiness to run Initial Teacher Training provision can be evidenced through an extensive range of designations, awards and achievements across the past 20 years all bearing testimony to the high standards the school sets itself and our commitment to ensuring that the name of The Compton Teaching School is linked to high quality provision and delivery of education services
As well as being one of the first 100 schools in the country to be designated a National Teaching School, we have been awarded Beacon School status and Training/Leading Edge specialisms. We are a designated Academy Sponsor, a hub leader within the Challenge Partners national network of 200 plus schools and have been involved in a number of pan-London projects such the National College sponsored Going for Great Programme
In 2014-15 we achieved outstanding GCSE exam results and featured in the top 100 schools for KS2-4 progress in 8 GCSEs. We were also the top ranked school for student progress within our family of 55 schools. This year our students achieved 77% A*-C including English and Maths, with 34% of our students achieving A and A* grades. Our 2014 results placed us within the top 1% of schools nationally for progress and we hope to be ranked similarly this year once national data is released
Our Headteacher, Teresa Tunnadine, is a National Leader in Education and an Ofsted Inspector. She has played a prominent role in shaping national educational policy as a National Teaching School Council representative for London and the South East as well as being one of only 20 Heads to sit on the DfE Secondary Heads' Reference Group. In 2013 she was awarded a CBE for services to education as well as an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University for her role in education locally. In addition, Ms Tunnadine was a 2013 finalist in the annual TES awards for Headteacher of the year
In the summer term of 2014 Ms Tunnadine was one of only 32 Heads selected to the regional Headteachers board for South East England and North West London. The board will contribute to the work of the regional Educational Commissioner and play a significant role in supporting regional educational development
In the summer of 2014 The Compton was invited to join the Major of London's Gold Club a project aimed to involve the most successful schools in London in sharing good practice with other schools.
A strong partnership of schools and other educational institutions
We are the lead school in a Teaching School Alliance with 24 partners across primary and secondary schools and including one special school. We have two Higher Education Institutions (The Institute of Education and Middlesex University) and Barnet Local Authority as partners
The overwhelming majority of schools within the alliance are currently graded by Ofsted as outstanding or good. All longstanding school partners have an extensive track record and commitment to initial teacher training. You will have the opportunity to train in a variety of contrasting settings with quality assured levels of outstanding support and guidance from experienced teachers within your subject area
Our close links with the Institute of Education and Middlesex University means that we can draw upon their expertise in quality assuring the rigour and challenge of our training programme, ensuring that your development needs are being fully met
Trainees will be based at The Compton School, Finchley Catholic High School, St James' Catholic High School and Hendon School. The Compton SCITT will allocate trainees after the recruitment cycle.
A school based culture of high quality support for trainee
We have a long tradition of supporting teacher training through a wide variety of training routes, including GTP, PGCE, School Direct and Teach First. Over a third of our teaching staff are routinely involved with trainees through mentoring or delivering in-house training
Teaching staff are fully committed to the values and vision of being a National Teaching School. Classrooms are open areas for learning and staff are routinely observed as a key strand of peer based professional learning. You will be able to observe and learn from outstanding teachers not only in your own subject area but across all subject areas
Department teams operate in a highly collaborative way through shared planning and common schemes of work and lesson plans. You will have the opportunity to take risks, experiment and learn from your mistakes within a secure and structured framework
Strong systems of pastoral support are in place to underpin positive behaviour for learning. You will experience a vibrant, diverse and comprehensive school environment secure in the knowledge that you will be expertly supported in effective behavioural strategies.
Ongoing support for continuing professional development beyond the training year
Many trainees will access employment opportunities in schools within the wider Teaching School networks and partnership. The Compton SCITT will work with partners to provide appropriate ongoing support for trainees in their NQT year and beyond
In addition, teachers employed in our partner schools will have priority access to a range of continuing professional development opportunities delivered by The Compton School, including the Improving Teaching and Outstanding Teaching Programmes and programmes leading to national leadership qualifications for Middle and Senior Leaders (NPQML and NPQSL).
