Training with Disabilities and Other Needs Personal Qualities

The experience and perspective of a diverse workforce is invaluable in our partnership of schools and the education sector as a whole.  Candidates are asked during the application stage if they need support to become a teacher.  Based on the type of disability or need that a candidate discloses, adjustments can be considered and put in place for a teacher training interview and for training.  Possible adjustments may include:

  • Interviewing at the placement school a successful candidate would be training at

  • Providing car parking on-site where this may otherwise be limited

  • Providing printed training materials that are also accessible online for all trainee teachers

  • Encouraging the use of assistive technology to support reading

  • Providing access to a health and well-being assistance package.

Based on the information provided by candidates, the SCITT can discuss with them any reasonable adjustments that may support them in becoming a teacher.  This can vary dependent on the candidate's individual needs.

Personal Qualities

Applicants must provide evidence of an interest in working with young people, possess high quality communication skills. Speak fluently, clearly and grammatically. Be able to think analytically and possess personal qualities such as warmth, enthusiasm, self-motivation and resilience.
